The reading head replays the engine's last cycle at model speed: it lands on the part of each neuron that is active (a dendrite tip when input arrives, the soma near threshold, an axon terminal on a spike), reads the membrane voltage there, travels along the branches, moves to whichever cell glows brightest, and lands on the cells that actually traded. Each card draws a real traced neuron from that region of a 6-day-old zebrafish (axon taken as the longest cable, since the tracings do not label it).
